Arles 2024 : Écho 119 / Galerie Huit Arles : From Japan with Love

Preview

In parallel with the Rencontres de la Photographie d’Arles and in the continuity of its artistic direction, Écho 119 highlights Japanese women through the work of several Japanese photographers and a French woman, this summer at Galerie Huit Arles.

The exhibition will be on view on the walls of gallery eight from July 1st to July 31st.

Throughout the month of July, the beautiful Galerie Huit mansion will serve as a showcase for six Japanese artists from different generations. Although some are little (re)known, their photographic practices have contributed to the influence of Japanese photography and testify to the richness of female photographic practice in the archipelago.

Since its creation 8 years ago, Écho 119 has worked to support, represent and highlight these women photographers, like Sakiko Nomura, Tokyo Rumando, Chieko Shiraishi, Hitomi Watanabe and others, and to give them the place they deserve in the landscape of Japanese photography, still very (too) involved, in the representation in galleries and in institutions, of the big names of male photographer who return regularly. In Arles, this selection will be enriched by other invited photographers, thus giving a broader vision of this active contemporary Japanese female scene. To complete this picture, the gallery will present the work of French photographer Chloé Jafé, who, in a singular work, shed light on the intimate daily lives of Japanese women – those in the world of the yakuza, for seven years.

Artists presented: Hitomi Watanabe, Chieko Shiraishi, Tokyo Rumando, Sakiko Nomura, Michiko Kon, Chloé Jafé, Kawori Inbe

The exhibition will take place from July 1st to 31st, 2024 at the Galerie Huit Arles, 8 rue de la Calade, 13200 Arles.
