This is one of the highlights of this festival: The publication by the Éditions de juillet of the history of French photographic agencies by Françoise Denoyelle, Les agences de photographie – Une histoire française, as well as a cycle of round tables on the subject.
Photography agencies opened at the beginning of the 20th century. They then continued to increase, diversify and specialize. Press agency, illustration agency, agency of photographers, unknown as Rap or known as Magnum Photos, they are the essential tool for the dissemination of photographs, looking at the world in images. Their history is linked to that of the press and photography. However, they have been of little interest to historians. Those of the press ignore them and those of photography have retained only two of them for background studies. A few books devote their pages to the agency’s staff photographers and their icons and briefly discuss its history.
For the first time, historian Françoise Denoyelle offers a complete account of the history of agencies in France. It paints the picture of the evolution of reportage photography through its key years and those of crises and reconstructs the history of 85 agencies from 1900 to the present day. It traces their constitution, brings to life the men who animated them, analyzes the role they played in the history of the press and the reasons for their decline or their durability.
Finally, it has gathered in a directory more than 350 agencies which, at one time or another, have distributed photographs. An index of all the photographers quoted offers an essential tool.
This work is presented as a reference book for the use of photographers, collectors, curators, gallery owners and all those interested in or working in the field of heritage photography.
And don’t miss the round tables organized with the presence of Raymond Depardon.
