The second issue of « Arles » just launched, the bi-annual magazine is available in English or in French. Here is the editorial by Maja Hoffmann.
Peter Lindbergh, Martin Parr, Jack Pierson, Camille Vivier: an exceptional set of perspectives and an unprecedented diversity of talents have been brought together in this second issue of « Arles ». This issue also pays tribute to the vitality and verve of half a century of photographic art in the city through the photography festival founded by Lucien Clergue, Michel Tournier and Jean-Maurice Rouquette in 1969.
Photographers capture instances of reality and offer glimpses of other worlds. They zoom in on the unknown, illuminate beauty and point their lenses where it hurts. It is through the universal language of the image and the particular talent of the contributors to this issue that nature, culture and impermanence are evoked through the subjects explored.
The exclusive photos presented on these pages display a wide range of approaches. Camille Vivier composes a mosaic of images linked to the legendary room 10 of the Hôtel Nord-Pinus. Martin Parr strikes a chord between traditional Arles costumes and contemporary designers‘ creations. Sharon Core documents the fight for nature conservation led by the biologists at Tour du Valat. Jack Pierson is dazzled by the myth of Crin-Blanc. Finally, in an in-depth interview, Peter Lindbergh highlights the similarities between his native Rhineland and the Camargue, his adopted home. For this Arlesian of heart, “these regions and their inhabitants are authentic: things are reduced to their essence”. I hope you will find the photos and texts in this issue just as essential.
