Publishing house, Actes Sud, and its cultural arm the Méjan Association, are two of the major partners of the Rencontres d’Arles 2013 festival. This year has been particularly prolific (books, exhibitions and catalogues) and today’s issue is given over to the two organisations. It has been put together by Christian Caujolle. In what is a real injustice in these days of photographic munificence, Christian is himself still struggling to raise funds for the 6th Festival of Phnom Penh with its focus on emerging photographers from South-East Asia. Christian is keen to link up with new partners.

With three major festival sites – both floors of the Chapelle du Méjan, the old Le Capitole à la Roquette cinema and Magasin Electrique store at the Parc des Ateliers – where Actes Sud, the publishing house founded by Hubert Nyssen is likely to move to – , the Méjan Association, which organises exhibitions and concerts throughout the year, is one of the major players at the Rencontres. A festival partner and an independent programmer, the Association sets up events in dialogue with publications brought out by Actes Sud. 2013 is a particularly rich and ambitious year for the Méjan, with exhibitions, introductions to new photographers and the reaffirmation of more established names, widening the reach of international artists such as Penone or Lee Ufan, so admired by Jean-Paul Capitani. And of course, there’s an extensive list of works accompanying – or sometimes preceding – these exhibitions.
