Antonio discovered me in Paris and taught me a great deal about posing and modeling. He introduced me to a lot of people. He was a very talented artist, and we miss him.

Fashion designer Norma Kamali once referred to Antonio Lopez as “the John Singer Sargent of our times.” He redefined the craft of fashion illustration, elevating it to the level of portraiture and social portrayal. Beginning in the 1960s, designers looked to his drawings for his unerring sense of what the next big fashion look would be. But Lopez’s impact went further than clothes and extended far beyond illustration to photography; he was a master at discovering models. Besides Jerry Hall, Lopez is the one who found Jessica Lange, Patti D’Arbanville, Donna ]ordan, Pat Cleveland, and many others. “Here’s what I do,” he once told Esquire magazine. “[I take the girls, introduce them, give them a look, tell them what to do, what not to do; I make appointments with photographers, like an agent. I tell them, ‘She’s for you!’ it usually works out.” Photographers benefited from his eye for three decades. Lopez died in 1987 at the age of 44.
