– Deposits and archival spaces generate internal situations that might evoke the chance meeting on a dissecting table of an umbrella and a sewing machine, setting up new meanings – for example, a divan placed on two wooden boxes labelled “fragile”, a deer grazing inside a grey office, or a couple of closed boxes labelled “Love sacrifice” (Sacrificio de amor).
– Let us say that archives, for me, generate two realities: on the one hand, the “objective”, the aim of the collection, making up a coherent, structured, classified collection or accumulation, responding to both a Romantic and a rational impulse. On the other hand, the “internal”, which complements rather than contradicts the former – the series of relationships that come about between the objects and the people who order them, who occupy the space, define the form, the labels and identifications, who hang things; what is forgotten, what is left open, left closed, left out; a light, a reflection, a shadow, a label, the decoration, each person’s world; what we see and what we read.
– Example. We see: a group of metal film reels, a desk, a lamp, cupboards. We read: “until completely empty” (hasta estar completamente vacío) on a 35mm reel hanging vertically in the work space.
