Dog Days, by New York photographer Andrea Stern is an uncompromisingly honest and poetic look at a period of her life, long ended. Dredging her photography archives, she discovers a store of past observations in a new light.
I was a mess so a friend suggested a dog. The next day, I returned home from the pound with a 6-week old puppy I named Suki, thinking it was the Japanese word for happiness. Standing no taller than a small pineapple, Suki became my constant companion, and, along with my camera, accompanied me on restless rambles, ill-fated trips, and unexpected discoveries.
These pictures—remnants of a raw and tender period—belong to a time I dubbed, until now, the decade of inconsequential accomplishments. But seen through the aperture of time and forgiving eyes, this collection recalls a debt owed to my younger self, who, undaunted by the outcome, lived close to her questions.
