Etherton Gallery is participating in the 39th edition of the AIPAD New York Photography Show with a booth highlighting the career of influential documentary photographer Danny Lyon (b. 1942), Danny Lyon: For the Record.
Danny Lyon: For the Record, highlights a selection of vintage photographs by Danny Lyon from the Silverman Museum Collection, the largest privately held collection of vintage Danny Lyon photographs in the United States. The collection tracks the career of one of the most dedicated and uncompromising documentary photographers of the 20th century. It includes several images not seen since Lyon’s first solo exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1966, as well as a number of prints included in Lyon’s recent international traveling retrospective, all of which is on view at Booth 401.
Etherton Gallery also shows a unique 4 x 8 feet, monumental collage board, “WHO ARE WE” composed of meticulously collaged Polaroid work prints, contact sheets, family snapshots, personal artifacts like a vintage signed Weegee self-portrait which shows Weegee perched atop a huge six-shooter, a sign for a New York City gun shop; portraits of Civil War military leaders; a sign pointing to the place where Sitting Bull was born, images of the civil rights movement, and more. An homage to Weegee, Robert Capa, Lee Miller and others, “WHO ARE WE” is the product of a lifetime in picture making that is at once deeply personal, and profoundly political.
“WHO ARE WE” is on display on the outside wall of Booth 401.
