Sasha Wolf Gallery is an exhibition space at 70 Orchard Street in the Lower East Side that specializes in contemporary photography by emerging and mid-career artists. The gallery prides itself on its strong vision and highly curated inventory. All photographs are for sale and are produced by the artists in limited editions. In part of the AIPAD Photography Show 2015, the gallery selected for us a selection of three photographs ,Adam Katseff, Caleb Charland and McNair Evans.
1. Adam Katseff
River XI, 2015. Lacquered pigment print, 60″x72″.
Adam Katseff’s black and white photographs, made on large format, 8 x 10” negatives, reference subjects both elemental and deeply familiar. In this series, Katseff explores recurring themes of minimalism and the reductive form but moves his focus, contextually to water. Water, in the form of rivers and falls, is separated out from the surrounding darkness, reflecting the slow, gradual process of water carving its way through rock and earth.
2. Caleb Charland
Penumbra #53, 2015. Photogram, 8″x10″.
Out of a desire to be elemental within the photographic medium, Charland began making work with the most basic of photographic materials; silver gelatin paper and a candle. The photograms comprising the Penumbra series are a continuation of his exploration of camera-less photography, following his critically acclaimed Artifact series.
3. McNair Evans
Journals, 2010. Pigment print, 32″x40″.
In 2010, photographer McNair Evans returned to his childhood home in Laurinburg, North Carolina, to retrace his father’s life and legacy after his death nine years earlier. Evans delved into his family origins and his father’s history to create a multi-layered photographic narrative about love and loss, using medium and large format cameras to chronicle his father’s journey.
