AIPAD 2015 : Galeria Vasari (AR)

Preview

Dedicated to the Modernist European photographers who established their professional careers in Argentina before or during World War II. Galería Vasari also represents renowned Argentine contemporary photographers, all of whom are highly recognized by art critics and cultural institutions. In part of the AIPAD Photography Show 2015, the gallery presents  a selection of three photographs , Grete Stern, George Friedman and McNair Evans.

1. Grete Stern
Los sueños de trenes, Idilio Nº40, En el andén, 1949, Gelatin silver print, 1995 print by Ricardo Sanguinetti

The complete collection of 46 vintage photomontages of the series Dreams was published by Grete between 1948 and 1951 in the section “Psychoanalysis will help you” of the magazine Idilio (published by Abril), a key work of the photographic avant-garde in Argentina. These photomontages depicted the dreams submitted by the magazine readers, interpreted by sociologist Gino Germani -director of Idilio-, who wrote under the pseudonym Richard Rest.
It is Stern’s highest and most appreciated work, valued long time after it was completed. It was an advance in gender photography that was so well considered and studied in the seventies.

2. George Friedman
Rio, ca. 1950, gelatin silver print, Vintage print,  47,5  x 58 cm

George Friedman was a member of La Carpeta de los diez, a clinic constituted by ten immigrant modern photographers who all worked in Argentina.
From 1939, while Europe succumbed to totalitarian regimes (enemies, amongst other things, of avant garde artists) and the United States of America became an international power, Friedman’s modernist traits were enhanced when he moved to Argentina. His works acquired singular connotations.

3. Annemarie Heinrich
La manzana de Eva, 1953, gelatin silver print, Vintage print, 38,5 x 29 cm

A photographer of surprising visual sensibility, she specialized in portraits and developed a new genre in Argentina: the celebrity photograph. Soon her fame spread, and well-known women and men, not only Argentinean people but foreign visitors too, came to her studio and valued her work.
Although she never formally taught, Heinrich was a mentor to great photographers. Between 1952 and 1959, she was part of La Carpeta de los 10 (Folder of Ten), a group of ten photographers that debated and critiqued their work. It was a photographic clinic..
