Exhibition and book published by Gallimard of Ils furent foule soudain, by the photographers from the MYOP photo agency.
“They were only a few, they were suddenly a crowd”: it is on these verses by Paul Éluard that Amnesty International and the MYOP agency meet to bear witness together to the power of the demonstrations.
From the historic Tiananmen Square protests in China to the youth climate strikes and the Arab Spring uprisings, this exhibition immerses you in the momentum of collective mobilizations, driven by a combination of gestures. Those of the protesters on one side and those of the photographers on the other, who ultimately become one, to deliver the same story.
The people who protest are as convinced that they are in their place, here – to make demands – as the photographers are convinced that they are in their place, there – to document, inform, tell.
If we tend to want to denounce what shocks us, displeases us, astounds us or makes us angry, it is by demonstrating that individual demands become collective demands. Demonstrating motivates us. Demonstrating commits us. It is an irrepressible reflex: a universal act of resistance and solidarity. The right to demonstrate peacefully must be exercised without hindrance. However, it is too often contested and repressed.
Because it is essential and because it protects others, it must constantly be defended.
The exhibition is visible on rue de Rivoli and in the inner courtyard of the Académie du Climat, from March 14th to May 11th, 2025.
Public opening on Thursday, March 13th from 6:30 p.m.
