The 10th edition of the Angkor Photo Festival & Workshop was a success. A selection of photographers were on hand, brought together by Belgian curator Françoise Callier. Some of her compatriots, including Léonard Pongo, Sébastien Van Malleghem, Marie Sordat and Dieter Telemans, were selected for the projections.
The exhibition Mékong, histoires d’hommes by the photographer Lam Duc Hien was exhibited along the banks of the river during the opening ceremony, which representatives of the Siem Reap Governorate attended. The 1.5-meter prints by photographer Zeng Nian depicting the construction of the Three Gorges Dam left viewers dumbstruck. Patrick Brown’s poignant Trading in Extinction, a 10-year investigation of the treatment of wild animals in Asia, inspired a wave of emotions and sparked a fiery public debate. On the final night of the festival, the photographer Max Pam gave a thrilling presentation of his work in Yemen.
Every year, the Angkor Photo Festival develops new activities. For the first time, authorities permitted the installation of 11 outdoor exhibitions throughout the city, offering new perspectives for the festival and the public. Another new feature this year was the 150 Khmer students who were given guided tours of the exhibitions. As it celebrates its 10th anniversary, the festival focuses more than ever on the future of a generation of up-and-coming photographers.
