In bringing together about thirty of Dolorès Marat’s photographs on the theme of animals, FLAIR Gallery invited us to take part in a new and unusual exploration of this remarkable artist’s work. The exhibition, which runs from July 2nd to August 27th, is made up entirely of Fresson prints, a rare printing process whose smoky, pictorial appearance perfectly suits the photographer’s dreamlike work.
In Dolores Marat’s work, a cat doesn’t have to be a cat, a woman could also be a crocodile, a spider or even a fly, and a bush can turn itself into a dog. As the title of one of her books, Illusion, suggests, Dolores Marat loves side roads. Although she always photographs reality, what we see in her pictures doesn’t seem real. An instinctive photographer, she refrains from nothing and doesn’t set any rules for herself, except to go where her feelings lead her. The images that have marked out her journey for three decades are, as a consequence and in a certain way, the sum of her emotions; felt randomly during her travels or in her daily life.
