We welcome any limited edition of photo publications, especially those that circulate like a secret.
That’s the case for the 25 copies of Northlands, with photographs by Elena Ayllon and illustrations by Sakura Sato. Eighteen pages of photographs of snow-covered mountains, and on the facing page, a nesting fox or a finely drawn mountain.
Like its bluish snow, the book is silent, even silencing. How many ungainly and slightly pretentious works have we seen awkwardly juggle detail and beautiful silence? Northlands, for its part, is concise as the most finely wrought short story, with each page adding to the previous one. To read it is to hold a complex and quiet conversation with someone who breathes through their belly and wastes no one’s time. No one will ever be able to explain how Ayllon struck the perfect tone, and that’s for the best.
Take a look at the other little books from the Spanish publishers Ciervo & Castor, which translates to “Stag & Beaver,” two animals who are making a name for themselves.
