The Circulation(s) festival runs through March 8th, 2015, at the Centquatre in Paris. This week we’re taking a closer look at La vie 2 Reve – Nick Charles III, featured at the festival. In 2010, the photographer Paul Heintz, explored the Charles III prison in Nancy, France, just before its demolition, immortalizing the inscriptions on the yellowed and peeling cell walls. We see girls’ names, disillusioned comments about the living conditions, and calls for both mutiny and calm. Shot in semi-darkness, the photographs in Paul Heintz’s 48-page journal say enough about prison life to make any further comment unnecessary. The vision is respectful, tender, and the humanity of the words left behind by the prisoners can even bring a smile to one’s face.
