Yulia Nevskaya : Nobody lives there
The waste reformation project started in Russia in January 2019 as a result of the ongoing crisis. The government has decided to dump the solid household waste from Moscow in the hinterlands instead of constructing recycling facilities. It was mentioned, that nobody lived on these territories. But that is not true.
The first construction of a garbage dump started last summer at the Shyes railway station (1200 km from Moscow). The waste from Moscow will be daily delivered there by trains. Local inhabitants have initiated protests because they are afraid of the environmental consequences of the dump. Later, many people from other cities’ and even from abroad have joined to them.
The developer hasn’t provided any documents and permits for the construction. No official ecological researches of the territory were conducted. The public is appalled by this corrupt approach.
The objection started in early September last year. The locals boycotted the delivery of construction machinery and fuel to the range. They have organised control posts and have been staying on them 24 hours a day for a year already. But it is a peaceful protest. People openly manifest that the only thing they want is to live on their land, but not to survive on a Moscow landfill site. Shyes railway station is surrounded by marshes. Dumping waste here means that ground water and rivers nearby will be spoiled. For most local villages wells are the only source of water. They say: «We protect our motherland from the motherland. Because we have no place to go». They call this constructing «The death beach”.
