Lara Khaldi invited me to produce work for Jerusalem 2011 on the theme “About Language”. I had been working on landscapes for several years, with Landscape of Darkness, Area C, In Exile, and wanted to continue researching along this line. I also wanted to do something with my archives, pictures I had taken 5 years ago, when I was married and taking pictures of our road trips. I always classed my work by date. When I process my pictures, I organize them chronologically, not thematically. When I study my archives, I always discover pictures of my ex and of my former life. I’ve always wondered what to do with these pictures. Live with them, or put them aside? At the same time, I was asked to take pictures of the wall and I wrote a text for the occasion. Thinking about my new project, these sentences jumped into my mind. So I decided to combine these two elements in an original narration similar to film, a format I had wanted to explore for some time but couldn’t as I had purchased a Nikon D700 instead of a Canon 5D. I was going to use photography in sequence form, inspired by Chris Marker’s La Jetée.
The complete text by Laurence Cornet is available on the French version of La Lettre.
Imane Fares gallery in Paris will have an exhibition of the pictures starting the 31st of Jan 2013
