American Pictures by Jeff Dunas is one of the flagship exhibitions of the Xposure festival which is being held in Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates from February 19 to 26, 2025. Jeff presents it as follows:
Photography has been my way of trying to see as hard as I could. Each series I’ve made has been seeing over extended periods and expressed with different visual languages but the bottom line is this: I saw very early that I could stop time.
After living in Europe from the early 70s through mid-90s, I returned to the United States able to see my country from a new perspective. I began photographing for the American Pictures project in 1993.
For the first series of pictures, during multiple road-trips crossing the country between 1993 and 2000, I worked primarily in black and white. My process was simple: when I came upon a scene that brought to mind a memory from my childhood, I knew a photograph was waiting to be found.
The images that I made working entirely in color for the second series (1993 through 2024) speak to the fondness I discovered for the unique ways Americans choose to live and express themselves.
