Living With Mental _ is a series of pictures of ephemeral surroundings, showing everyday objects with a poetic and immaterial approach. Viriya attempts to trans- form such inane objects by trying to give them a sense of intimacy and life, so that each photograph individually or, as part of a series, tells its own story.
Whilst independent, the subjects are also inextricably linked so the everyday life experience is captured through the creation and interpretation of a timeless image.
Viriya utilises urban materiel and visits rubbish dumps during the course of his work. By focusing on these discarded and abandoned objects, Viriya can explore and interpret daily life with a detached attitude. Rather than using the objects directly, some meaning is given, or even assigned, through the medium of photography – lending the subject matter an artistic value as opposed to perceived worthlessness.
This particular series, many years in formation, enables Viriya to set the invisible in the visible. By that, we refer, not to some mystical power of imagination, but to what, at first glance, is invisibile, but slowly becomes visible upon further viewings.
For Viriya Chotpanyavisut, these photographs merge the outer with the inner world – created through the observation made from dreamed and realised images. These images represent <>. By contrasting Light with shadow, and objects with their state, Viriya Chotpa- nyavisut is coaxing many senses from the unpredictability of lost and found items. Senses like a hazy appearance, a sensory ambiance, some insinuated sounds and even a possible narrative – all activated through a little inventiveness.
