Viltin Gallery in Budapest presents Permutation, an exhibition by Péter Tímár as part of the Budapest Photo Festival 2024 program. The photographer writes :
I have also learned that one must seek the best. Just as it is the actor’s job to find the best tone of voice, the best gesture, so it is with the photographer who seeks the ‘best’ moment, the best angle, framing, tone. But often this is not what interests me. For years, I regularly attended theater rehearsals because what intrigued me more was the multitude of possibilities, how a role could be played or could have been played, rather than the decided, final, perfect performance. Similarly, it brings me joy to read manuscripts of poems, the written and crossed-out alternatives to familiar lines. As a photographer, it is the visual possibilities that particularly excite me. The collective possibilities, like ART – whether it’s a freely configurable sequence of moments of a story, a series of facial expressions, or the movements within an image detail. Or the colors: who dares to claim to know the “true” colors of nature? I’m not saying that things could be like this or like that, but rather that things are like this and like that, simultaneously, at the same time. The ‘permutation’ is the series of these possibilities, and from the long series, only as much fits on these finite expanses of walls. – Péter Tímár
