The Villa Médicis has announced the 16 winners of the residents’ competition for the year 2024-2025, and finally a woman of images is part of this promotion. Her name is Ana Vaz.
At the end of a selection procedure for which 713 applications were submitted, the jury for the competition for residents of the French Academy in Rome — Villa Medici selected 16 winners. This new class of residents, representing 6 artistic disciplines and 6 different nationalities, will be welcomed at the Villa Médicis from September 2, 2024 for a one-year residency of creation, experimentation and research. Residents will benefit from a residency grant, accommodation and work space.
Ana Vaz (1986, Brazil) is an artist and filmmaker born in the Brazilian Midwest inhabited by the ghosts buried by its modernist capital: Brasília. Her filmography provokes and questions cinema as an art of the (in)visible and an instrument capable of dehumanizing humans, broadening connections with forms of life other than human or spectral. Consequences or expansion of her cinematography, her artistic activities are also embodied in writing, critical pedagogy, installations or collective walks. Her residency project is devoted to the writing of ANHNANGUERA, a scenario in the making for a trans(e)historical fiction which emerges from the history of the colonization of the Brazilian Far West, birthplace of Ana Vaz and central axis of her entire filmography. The film starts from a wild interpretation of the book History of the Earth and Humankind in the central stage by Paulo Bertran, a historical kaleidoscope which interweaves geological, pre-modern and modern time. The archive of the Institutum Historicum Societatis Iesu, a Catholic congregation based in Rome and responsible for the evangelization of the country, is one of the guides for the writing of this cosmopolitical Western.
