Views of China 1860–1970 at the Millon Auction House

Paris is going to display Asian colors for the duration of a unique event: a week filled with auctions accompanied by an exhibition highlighting the sophistication of Asian Art. The Millon Auction House and the expert Christophe Gouery have invited us to attend. On June 24, nearly 200 lots including single prints and entire photo albums devoted to China, will come under the hammer of Alexander Millon. Constituted over the years by Alain Sayag, honorary photography curator at the Centre Georges Pompidou and the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, this unique collection offers an insight into the incredible transformations undergone by the Middle Kingdom between 1860 and 1970.

“Collections focusing on photography in China are very rare…,” said Alain Sayag. Even though the Musée français de la photographie in Bièvres houses the oldest surviving photographs of China (namely, daguerreotypes made by Jules Itier in 1844 in Canton (today Guangzhou) and Macau), it’s not everyday that one gets to contemplate a complete collection. The Millon Auction House fills this gap by showcasing nearly a century’s worth of images and bringing together diverse points of view.
