An auction of 206 modern and contemporary photographs was held on November 27 at Villa Grisebach in Berlin.
Among the items for sale were rare albums and portfolios, including one by the German photographer Albert Renger-Patzsch, a member of the New Objectivity movement, showing daily work on a farm in Schleswig-Holstein in Germany in the 1930s. The portfolio was sold for 45,000 euros, setting a record for the day.
Not far behind were Peter Beard’s “Orphaned Cheetah Cubs” (1968), which sold for 43,750 euros, and a vintage Greta Garbo portrait taken by Edward Steichen in 1928, which sold for 37,500 euros, less than its estimated value.
Steve McCurry’s famous “Afghan Girl” sold for 32,500 euros, and a color print of Bettina Rheims’ “7 Novembre — Paris” from the 1991 series “Chambre close” was bought for 32,500 euros, more than four times its estimated value.
Classic works by Henri Cartier-Bresson (“Rue mouffetard,” 1954) and Robert Mapplethorpe (“Tulips,” 1983) also fetched prices higher than expected, 23,750 euros and 21,250 euros, respectively.
Pictured here are the twelve items that sold for more than 10,000 euros (premium included). Altogether they make up a balanced set of black-and-white, color, modern and contemporary photographs.
