Vannes 2012 : Titanic – Cité de la mer de Cherbourg

Titanic

At the occasion of the festival, the Cité de la Mer in Cherbourg has partnered with the City of Vannes to present photographs of the Titanic that have never been seen before. These extraordinary images of this legendary ship will cover the walls of the Kiosque Culturel, located in the heart of the Vannes Marina. 100 years after the most publicized sinking of the century, these photographs will awaken memories and give a preview of the new Titanic space that will be inaugurated at The Cité de la Mer. These images brim with history and emotion, covering the construction of the legendary boat in the shipyards of Belfast and its inaugural journey starting from Southampton. The visitor is asked to envision its richly decorated interiors and encounter some of the passengers who boarded in Cherbourg, some of whom possessed the greatest fortunes of the century. The exhibition brings back to life the legendary stopover in Cherbourg on April 10th, 1912 at 6:35pm, as well as the famous journey across the Atlantic, until the shipwreck off the coast of Newfoundland on April 14th at 11:40pm.

The Cité de la Mer, Cherbourg
Unique in Europe, The Cité de la Mer in Cherbourg is a destination dedicated to the underwater adventure of man. Established 10 years ago on the historical site of the Transatlantique Boat Station in Cherbourg, it houses several centers of interest including:
-The Redoutable: a visit to the largest submarine in the world that is open to the public.
– The Abyss: an exploration through seventeen aquariums, including the deepest aquarium in Europe and the virtual adventure, “We Walked on the Sea.”
– The Great Gallery of Machines and Man: showcasing inhabited submarines that are emblematic of deep sea diving.
100 years after the Titanic stopover in Cherbourg Harbor, The Cité de la Merinaugure presents a permanent exhibition dedicated to the Titanic and to the history of emigration to the New World. This new space will spread its influence on an international scale thanks to partnerships with some of the major emigration ports and with the network “Titanic Cities,” among which Cherbourg stands with Belfast, Liverpool, Southampton and Cobh.
