Vanessa Winship: Henri Cartier-Bresson Prize

Preview

Awarded every two years on the basis of a project hosted by the Henri Cartier-Breson Foundation with the partnership of the Wendel Group of an indivisible amount of 30,000 €, the HCB prize 2011 was awarded to the English photographer Vanessa Winship for her project “Là-bas: une odysée américaine” (Over there: An American Odyssey)

Initiated by Robert Delpire in 1996, the HCB Prize aims to help promote creation by rewarding a project. This will be featured at the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson in the Spring 2013.

Vanessa Winship was presented by the VU Gallery who devoted an exhibition last fall. Her work focuses on the individual and its history. It is precisely this humanist dimension that the jury decided to stress. “Her work might be seen as a classic documentary approach but in fact it features a sensitivity and complexity that is deeply contemporary”. This prize is awarded by an international jury who informed on its decision last June 14, and was composed of seven personalities of the world of the arts.

Robert Delpire, Editor, President of the Jury Martine Franck, Photographer, Président of the Fondation HCB. Antoinette Seillière, Vice-President of the Fondation Croix Saint-Simon, representative for the Groupe Wendel. Carlos Gollonet, Director for photography, Fondation MAPFRE, Madrid, Frits Gierstberg, Director of exhibitions, Nederlands Fotomuseum, Rotterdam, Sylviane de Decker, Photograph Historian, Paris, replaced by Agnès Sire, Director of the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson. And Sylvia Wolf, Director at the Henry Art Gallery, Seattle.
