The exhibition Rússia Sagrada (Sacred Russia) at the Museum of Image and Sound (MIS) runs through December 11. Organized by the Russian Ministry of Culture, this exhibition brings together 20 photographs by Vadim Gippenreiter, who toured the Golden Ring of Russia, a group of cities northeast of Moscow renowned for their historical, religious and architectural importance. “Russia is a country where the four seasons are clearly represented,” says exhibition curator Katarine Matveeva. “Brazilian museumgoers will be able to observe this through photographs, the color of autumn gold, snow in the winter and green forests in the summer.”
Born in Moscow in 1917, Gippenreiter is an avid traveler, hunter and mountaineer. A forerunner of artistic landscape photography in Russia, Gippenreiter has been featured at several exhibitions in the remotest regions of the former Soviet Union. Among his celebrated series are his photographs of ancient Russian churches and monasteries in the Golden Ring.
