Joseph Muhumuza’s image “Winnowers of Hope” was chosen as the winning photograph of the Uganda Press Photo Award 2021.
Joseph Muhumuza is a freelance humanitarian and documentary photographer living in Fort Portal. It is his first time to enter the awards. This year he takes home a professional-level Canon EOS 5D Mark IV DSLR along with an EF 24-70mm lens along with other prizes.
Joseph says, “The reason I choose photography is because I am thrilled to do something that allows me to explore my art and creativity while documenting
significant stories and moments that happen in daily life. Every day I learn something new about life and to me it is an honor to witness the emotions, the love, the peace, the happiness and sadness and hence turn these into life experiences and changing stories through photographs”.
Winnowers of Hope
A group of women sieve leftover rice husks outside a mill in Mbale, Eastern Uganda, in search of overlooked grains which have not been gathered. By re-sieving the mill’s chaff, the women gather enough rice to feed their families. Rice, a delicacy which is only eaten on special occasions in some rural areas, costs a little more than most other foodstuffs on the market.
