“Today’s Levitation” is the ongoing self-portrait-diary project for the year 2011 produced by Natsumi Hayashi, a Japanese contemporary photographer. It has been updating daily bases since the first day of the year at the photographer’s blog called “yowayowa camera woman diary” — meaning “a feeble camera woman’s diary.
In contemporary societies where many feel it difficult, if not impossible to avoid becoming rooted in unavoidable social conventions, “Today’s Levitation” shows the photographer herself being free from the earth’s gravity as a metaphor of the social conventions.
The photographer captures the images for the project in and around Tokyo, equipped with her SLR and her self timer. When she feels the moment strike, she presses the shutter release button down and then, quite literary, “jumps” into place.
