My name is Thomas Devaux. I’m 32 years old and live in Paris.
In this series Attrition, I am attracted to learning more about mankind which is always somewhere between grace and harshness and between the sacred and the profane.
My models no longer really exist. I broke each of them down and recomposed them using body parts from several other models. I used the eyes of one girl in the place of another, etc.
All of the photos have been for the most part taken backstage at very important fashion shows in Paris. I love taking the models, placing them in an unreal world, and giving them a darker beauty .
Each subject in this work is in reality a composite made up of ten individuals. Here we enter into an aesthetic that is even darker than in my others series not only because of the singular use of black and white, but also because of the game played by the organic and immaterial spiritual aspects of the body.
I work on man’s pride, his overbearing power over nature. I sanctify my subjects and transform them into icons that I break with subtle details, sweeping away vanities all at once.
In the end, it is really just about organic matter that will disappear one day or another and in one way or other.
