Born in 1978, Michael Massaia grew up in New Jersey and has remained nearby New York his whole life. The short documentary The Twilight World of Michael Massaia presents this self-taught photographer, represented by the Holden Luntz Gallery, wandering around the quiet, unpopulated streets of the New York City metro area and Central Park. The film includes Massaia’s interview, describing his poetic and complicated photographic process, based on large-format camera, specific chemical and material process, and of course, black and white films.
This documentary was shot and conceived by Sam Syed.
“There is a sense of freedom to me in the hours between two and four in the morning… I feel like anything can happen.
The only real job of an artist is to find things that people don’t think are special and make them… special.
Black and white large format film has a quality, an organic quality, a dimension that is so superior to anything that can be done digitally.
