Through the series The Others, Olivier Culmann uses Indian societal codes and the practice of studio photography to question our relationship to identity and how social conventions can turn it into a multiplicity of fantasized images.
Olivier Culmann defuses all the pitfalls inherent to the self-portrait, but refuses to behave simply as a distanced observer. True, he plays. But a very serious game of practical analysis of the workings of identity photography. His choice – as connoisseur and lover of India – escapes the exotic because it questions the issues, not the appearances (…), the succession of phases of experimentation could be likened to a research approach in the field of humanities.
