The Impression: between fashion and political engagement

Preview

The latest issue of the magazine The Impression is entitled The Issues Issue and is devoted to inviting the fashion industry to share pressing issues of today to open dialogue and inspire hope.

The theme for the issue came in response to conversations its editor was having with industry creatives. “Fashion creatives hold a mirror up to society to reflect aspirational dreams that society doesn’t even know they want yet. It’s frustrating to see microphones held up to these worldly, educated creatives asking them about trends and models. High time we heard their thoughts on real world issues and how those issues impact their creation process.”

This focus on issues is present throughout the magazine with iconic photographer Rankin tackling ageism and the abuses of social media apps that pervert self-image. “I want to be more about creating the aesthetic where the lines on your face, the way you’ve aged, is positive and something you should be perpetuating and not trying to hide with an app on your phone,” he says.

It features also work by David Lipman who addresses racism and the inclusivity of the American dream in his story entitled I Am Not Your Negro, photographers Chuando & Frey who explore the dangers of overexposure and projecting fake versions of one’s life for the sake of digital followers, or Christian Dior’s first female Creative Director, Maria Grazia Chiuri, who speaks about her journey, feminism and the promise of a better world for female creatives.
