The house of Dior: Seventy years of haute couture

Preview

The House of Dior was established in late 1946 and nurtured through its first ten years by its founder and creative director Christian Dior. After the presentation of his first collection in 1947, Dior’s designs were internationally acclaimed and the scope, ambition and influence of the house grew quickly over subsequent years. After Christian Dior’s sudden death in 1957 the house has continued to evolve and consolidate its place in the fashion world under the guiding hand of six further Directors (including the first female designer Maria Grazia Chiuri appointed in July 2016).

In celebration of the seventieth anniversary of the House of Dior, the National Gallery of Victoria, in Melbourne, presents a quite fascinating exhibition entitled The House of Dior: Seventy Years of Haute Couture. Exclusive to Melbourne, this show is a collaboration between the NGV and the House of Dior and includes a sumptuous display of more than 140 garments designed by Christian Dior Couture between 1947 and 2017.

The House of Dior explores the story of the fashion house through a series of themes, featuring works by the seven designers who have played key roles in shaping Dior’s renowned fashionable silhouette: Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferré, John Galliano, Raf Simons and Maria Grazia Chiuri. The House of Dior: Seventy Years of Haute Couture is accompanied by a scholarly publication full of photographs presented in this portfolio.
