The Armory Show 2013 –Yossi Milo

Preview

The famous New York gallery Yossi Milo is bringing to the Armory Show a selection from the gallery’s recent and successful exhibitions: American architectural photographer Ezra Stoller; Doug Rickard, famous for this Google Street View screen captures; and South African photographer Pieter Hugo, who has put his art into the service of communities across the African continent. Yossi Milo shared with us his personal experience of this important New York art fair.

What is your personal experience of The Armory Show? What are the differences you noticed with your experience at AIPAD, another art fair exclusively dedicated to photography ?

It is very difficult to compare the Armory Show and AIPAD. They are both really great shows, but also very different. The Armory Show is very large in scale and brings in a varied audience. At the Armory Show, I am very aware of the environment. There are many different mediums being shown throughout the fair, which makes for a more unique environment in which to show photography—it stands out more as a medium. The Armory attracts a very different kind of collector than those at AIPAD, which is a much smaller and more focused fair. There is a great sense of community at AIPAD, and it is very national, as opposed to Armory which attracts a more international crowd. The collectors at AIPAD are also generally more interested in photography, which makes for a rather different type of setting. Both shows are extremely special to us, albeit in different ways.

For the upcoming year, what are your tendencies going to be?
In the upcoming year, we are thrilled to be exhibiting the work of Simen Johan and Pieter Hugo, whose strong imagery is integral to the gallery’s programming. I am also looking forward to presenting artists who deal with experimental photographic techniques, such as Matthew Brandt, Alison Rossiter, Chris McCaw, and Julie Cockburn. Later this year we will be exhibiting the hand-altered photographs of Cockburn, who combines craft and fine art, using such techniques as sewing and collage in her work. These artists are expanding the photographic medium, using new techniques.
