British photographer Ben Hassett, who lives and works in New York City, has established a worldwide reputation with his striking beauty and portrait photography.
Experimenting with shadow and light — color and form — to create visceral, highly polished images, he follows in the tradition of Irving Penn and Erwin Blumenfeld, as a commercial photographer who also creates Fine Art.
A self-taught photographer, he is a camera enthusiast, always looking ahead to the next creative challenge.
Pushing the boundaries of still photography and more recently, digital motion video, there is no limit as to where Ben Hassett’s multi-faceted talents will take him next.
“The way we work now, it’s so easy to make perfect pictures”, he says in reference to the industry’s retouching practices. “I need mistakes. I need to see them, welcome them. In my studio, I’m trying to make an accident happen in front of the camera. It brings the whole thing to life. I’m looking for spontaneity.”
“I photograph a lot of women. A lot of those women are very beautiful. They’re almost all, without exception, strong and confident women”.
“I only agree to shoot people that I like”, he explains. “I have a special rule about that. I’m extraordinarily picky.”
Ben Hassett has created iconic advertising campaigns for brands such as Christian Dior, YSL, Shiseido, Burberry, Bulgari, Calvin Klein and L’Oréal.
Ben is a regular contributor to Vogue magazines worldwide. but also collaborates with Vanity Fair, W magazine, Harper’s Bazaar, Numero and The New York Times.
His work is held in the collection of the National Portrait gallery in London.
Printed with ultraviolet ink in a hand-numbered, slipcased edition of 1,000 copies, Color is the first monograph by Ben Hassett.
His desire is to explore the powerful language of color photography and invite us into his world of experimentation of this chromatic medium.
