The three series Mr Zuper, Tracks, Zidiomaticks and Douce amère by Sylvain Granjon were selected by Driss Aroussi (Art Director of CHEAP/ Vols de Nuit gallery) during portfolio review at the Gaite Lyrique on the 15 and 16 November 2014.
Mr Zuper
Mister Zuper is a great French super hero! He is beautiful, strong and intelligent… And 10 cm small! But he has a problem: he cannot go out of his apartment. So he has to lives all his adventures which he finds around him… For this series, I first photograph the superhero (in this case, myself), then I make a 10cm print of the image. I cut it out with great care and place it on this set with the help of nylon wires and collages. Then I take another medium-format photograph to arrive at the final print, which I color in by hand.
Zidiomaticks
Idiomatic expression: “An expression in a language which may not have a literal equivalent in other languages.”
Monsieur Sylvain, a little man with a bowler hat, 1970s suit and big shoes, acts out idiomatic expressions.
Douce amère
I come from the entertainment world. I have been an entertainer for 20 years. When I photograph my daughter, my own flesh and blood, I photograph myself. Her direct look has shaken my certainties. What I see in her eyes challenges me, as an adult, as a father. She seems to be asking me : “What have you become?” When I portray my daughter there is a seriousness at odds with her young age. I try to evoke the adult’s desperate quest for the mythical image of his or her own childhood; the source of all our emotions.
