The China Project features photographs taken by Sydney photographers, Meg Hewitt and Paul McDonald. The pair, who have just launched their own gallery in Sydney, 10×8, made solo trips to China in 2012 and have come together to present their work for the first time in a joint show for Head On.
Hewitt visited Litang in western Sichuan Province, near the border of Tibet in search of Chinese cowboys. Litang is situated at over 4000m making it one of the highest altitude towns in the world. Hewitt travelled overland traversing mountain passes to reach Litang where the annual horse festival is held each August attracting nomads from the region.
McDonald’s photographs depict the ethnic minority communities that populate the Guizhou Province and are part of a larger body of work that McDonald will exhibit in China later this year. McDonald has visited China a number of times in recent years and has been commissioned to document the reconstruction after the Sichuan Earthquake as well as other projects.
Both Hewitt and McDonald still shoot on film.
