In New York, Swann Galleries opened its season with a $1.6 auction sales last week, on Thursday 15th February.. Entitled Icons & Images: Photographs & Photobooks, the sales brought rare books and vintage prints taken from artists’ works or vernacular collection.
Photographic Views of the Red Rived Raft created in 1873, one of the last three copies existing, was sale for nearly $94K. A collection of Lewis W. Hine’ 24 prints was also sell at 92%. Included in this lot, ‘an extremely rare early printing of the monumental Powerhouse Mechanic’, ‘Mechanic at Steam Pump in Electric Power House’, sold for $81,250 and a contact print of ‘One of many youngsters working in Carolina cotton mills, also known as Sadie Pfeifer, a Cotton Mill Spinner, Lancaster, South Carolina, 1908′, sold for $30,000.
Prints from W. Eugene Smith, Horst P. Hosrt, Yousuf Karsh or André Kertesz were also among the works sold.
