The Galerie Madé present “Les Évaporés ” by Stéphane REMAEL
“Some 100.000 Japanese men and women vanish every year without trace. Free of their past, they try and start a new life as stowaways of the archipelago. This phenomenon is related to shame and dishonour and is at the heart of Japanese culture.”
Work from Photographer Stéphane Remael and Journalist Léna Mauger, Les Évaporés “The Vanished” a documentary research of several years that took them to Tokyo,Osaka and all the way to the forbiden zone of Fukushima
For the publication of the book The Vanished of Japan (Les évaporés du Japon) by the Éditions des Arènes, the Galerie Madé presents The Vanished an exhibition of photographs by Stéphane Rémael.
Stéphane Rémael alternates portraits of the vanished, men and women washed up in a parallel universe, with landscapes of wanderings and solitude. The cinematic treatment, in keeping with the photographer’s dreamlike world, pulls us into a crime novel atmosphere, a mysterious Japan in chiaroscuro.
Stéphane Remael graduated from « Le 75 » Art High School in Brussels. He co-founded the OEil Public Agency in 1996, who represented him until 2008. He lives in Paris and has been published in the international press for the past 15 years.
