It becomes an annual ritual, the City of Avignon exhibits the great annual competition of Underwater Photography of the Mediterranean and Provençal waters. This event is organized under the rigorous and determined leadership of the association “La Provence Sous Marine”. It must be said that the first prize is tempting with its fifteen underwater discoveries of the Red Sea.
It is hardly surprising that the association must organize itself to receive more than three hundred files. It is an external jury which preselects, from all of these totally anonymous photographs, about twenty views. The best three will then be selected during a deliberation.
The year 2021 is not under better auspices than the previous one for the organization of the great exhibition and its numerous conferences concerning all forms of submarine wealth. The organizers are not waiting and giving up. No indoor exhibition, the organizers were able to decide the authorities with an outdoor exhibition. This is how the best prints are displayed on the gates of Avignon parks. Naturally, the experience of accessing photographs by internet has been renewed for this year.
Let’s talk about photography! In recent years, scientific photographs have taken on many other dimensions than the mere descriptive obligation. This development was made possible by very often specially adapted materials. Over half a century, I have witnessed the structural enrichment of images and the delivery of a much richer message on the environments, the compositions, the successive games of sharpness, the modulation of lights all the way to the colorizations essential for an understanding reading.
Underwater photography has not escaped this development, for the pleasure of the eyes and the discovery of this environment.
