Domestic Monuments
The Domestic Monuments is a photographic work of over twenty years of my wanderings in the unseen villages of Rhodes. House museums, remnants of the last century photographed with their owners who are slowly declining and dwindling. They are located in the old neighborhoods of the villages, drowned by modern villas. A characteristic of their architecture is the “kamariko” where the entire house is supported on it since there are no foundations. They strongly resist time, stubbornly refusing modern fashions and comforts, carrying stories, memories, traditions and family heirlooms of their ancestors. Their residents are elderly, who, upon leaving life, their descendants who have either emigrated or moved to large urban centers do not care and unfortunately become deserted and are left to the whims of time. Houses that the modern demands and needs of the heirs make them unsuitable for the modern way of life. On their walls the entire family history comes to life: photographs of relatives, family moments, loved ones, embroidery, handicrafts, images, precious objects, decorations, posters, knick-knacks and of course the famous Rhodian dishes.
