In 2019, ART Shopping in Deauville welcomes 80 French and international exhibitors. With this second edition, the show confirms its desire to become an expected annual milestone, as much for the public as for the artists.
With its openness to photography, including thematic corners and the arrival of many photographic artists and specialized art galleries, ART Shopping Deauville highlights the photographer Roger Schall presented by the galerie ARGENTIC and makes accessible his famous photographs.
In November 2018, the festival Planche (s) Contact unveiled in exclusivity twenty-five large format photographs on monumental photographic structures, 3 meters high, mostly unpublished and unseen, made in Deauville between 1934 and 1950.
From the inaugural voyage of the liner Normandie to the Paris of the Roaring Twenties, Roger Schall’s square images, made with a Rolleiflex, have made him one of the best French photoreporters. He attended galas dinners and rubbed shoulders with the Paris society. He followed automotive elegance contests, yearlings races and sales, golf parties and regattas. With more than 150 magazine covers in 20 years, he was the reference of French elegance.
The photographs of Roger Schall have place and meanings in ART Shopping Deauville to be discovered and why not leave with pictures of the famous photographer in more accessible formats … to hang in one’s living room!
«After the presentation of Roger Schall’s photographs at the Planche (s) Contact Festival in monumental format, I am very happy to come to the ART Shopping exhibition, to present the photographs of Roger Schall, to help in the discovery of the work of one of the the most talented and inventive photographers of the 30s; the prints will be on sale at the show, “Eric Boudry, director of the galerie ARGENTIC.
This exhibition was made possible thanks to the support and initiative of the Schall family and the ARGENTIC gallery which allowed ART Shopping to show and make accessible these rare and historic works.
Deauville & Roger Schall
In the 1930s, photographer Roger Schall (1904- 1995) became one of the best French photoreporters. Multiplying the reportages and assignments for: VU, Match, The Illustration, Marie-Claire, … he discovered Deauville in 1934 and made until 1950 many photographs, with rigorous compositions. They remained, to date, unpublished. A reportage photographer rarely showed so many different and complementary facets of Deauville. In May 1935, Roger Schall was the only accredited photographer for the inaugural cruise of the Normandie liner. As soon as he returned from the United States, seduced by Deauville and its activities, he returned there in the summer of 1935, then in 1936 to witness the first summer of paid holidays in Deauville.
