It was in the wake of the official visit of President Pompidou Bruno Barbey discovered China in flux, but still under the influence of the Cultural Revolution. At the time, most of the population were wearing the Mao suit and the walls were covered with colorful slogans. A few years later, the photographer returned and already saw the effects of the invitation to the Chinese people, by Deng Xiaoping: “Enrich yourselves.” Nanjing, Suzhou, Macau, Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai … Bruno Barbey returned to China many times and found the profound changes that transformed the country. This book brings together a selection of photographs taken during the last forty years; Barbey draws a portrait of a nation on the move, passed in such a short time from a post-revolutionary era to the rank of the new global economic giant.
