In 1972, I sent a copy of my first book “The Dream Collector” to Michel Tournier, after reading his novel “The ogre”, about a french prisoner of war who collect local children to be soldiars in the German military schools. He invited me to the Arles Festival. In France, there is a long tradition between artists ans writers. He was one of the few people who appreciated my style of psychological surrealism opposed to the popular ‘street’ photography.
I photographied him at the Arles public swimming pool carrying away a child in a wheelborrow, as if he was a character in one of his own books.
