175 Masterworks To Celebrate 175 Years Of Photography: Property from Joy of Giving Something Foundation, a single-owner sale of the most significant collection of photographs in private hands, will take place at Sotheby’s New York on 11 & 12 December 2014. Comprised of works from photography’s earliest years in the 1840s to contemporary 21st-century color images, the auction will feature major photographs by the medium’s most important practitioners. The collection was put together over several decades by financier and philanthropist Howard Stein (1926-2011), a legendary collector whose vision and keen understanding of photography informed his choices. Mr. Stein donated the collection to the Joy of Giving Something, Inc. (JGS), a not-for-profit organization founded by him to further the photographic arts and arts education. JGS is the sole beneficiary of the sale.
The pre-sale estimate of $13/20 million is the highest ever for a Photographs auction.
