After presenting the recipients of the 2017 W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund in Humanistic Photography awards on October 18, 2017 (Daniel Garcia Castro, Edmund Clark and Alex Majoli), The Eye of Photography joins the organization and features the works of the prize finalists.
Exodus: A Long Way Home is a personal photo-book project inspired by my time covering the ‘Balkan route’ traversed by some one million refugees in 2015 alone. At the core of the project is the notion that migration is about much more than the physical movement of people. It is about shifting identities, as nations and peoples shape one other. It is about rebuilding lives and homes from zero. It is motivated by a desire to keep telling this story, even after the cameras and journalists have moved on to the next headline. At a time when the United Nations has warned that there are more forcibly displaced people in the world than any time since World War II, it is my hope that this photo-book will shine a spotlight not just on the harshness faced by refugees in leaving their homelands, but also the strength they show in creating new identities, lives and homes.
