The Savannah College of Art and Design presents work by alumni Mona Bozorgi (M.F.A., photography, 2018) and Emma Creighton Hopson (M.F.A., photography, 2021) at Photo London, the U.K.’s premiere photo fair at Somerset House, May 10–14. Named “the U.K. photography event of the year” by the Guardian, Photo London brings the finest photography to the international art mecca every year, spotlighting fresh perspectives as well as historic and vintage works.
Exploring the materiality of their medium, Bozorgi and Hopson reimagine constructs of image-making through the act of re- photographing. Each of their distinct practices contemplates themes of womanhood and femininity beyond patriarchal systems. In Object Fatale, Bozorgi examines the commercialization of the body using techniques suggestive of product photography. By juxtaposing human subjects and physical objects, she channels the transformative power of photography into multilayered images that challenge female objectification. In Wish You Were Here You Are, Hopson rejects patriarchal idealizations of the maternal. Using herself and her children as primary subjects, she engages notions of nostalgia, growth, and the passing of time, reflecting both the illusory condition of photography and the nuances and complexities of motherhood. Hopson will take part in two artist talks during the fair in conversation with Ben Tollefson, curator at the SCAD Museum of Art, and Michael James O’Brien, SCAD chair of photography, on Thursday, May 11 at 2 p.m. GMT and Friday, May 12 at 5 p.m. GMT
Both artists represent the top-ranked SCAD photography degree program, one of the most popular programs at the university. SCAD students learn classical practices as well as innovative next-generation digital technologies with state-of-the-art resources at both SCAD Savannah and Atlanta locations. SCAD photography students and alumni exhibit their work internationally, are featured in top-tier publications including Vogue, Vanity Fair, and Harper’s Bazaar, and secure leading roles at institutions like the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery.
“This marks the fourth year SCAD will present at Photo London, and we are thrilled to once again provide visitors the opportunity to experience the vibrant photography practices of our accomplished alumni. These works high– light our dynamic photography program, which covers creative practices from the 19th century to the metaverse. Every year we have presented at the fair has added outstanding value to our university mission to continuously amplify the creative voices of our SCAD community.”
