Having often stayed in Cuba, Sarah Caron presents us with her personal vision of this country undergoing great change. Her images show the creative explosion taking place in the fashion sector, from the models on the catwalk to the men and women in the street.
As a photojournalist, Sarah Caron works on news stories for the French and foreign press as well as on long term and more personal projects. She has received many awards such as the Prix de la Fondation Lagardère and the Prix Canon from the Association of Women Journalists in France with the support of Figaro Magazine in 2012 at Visa pour l’Image. Her photographs have been acquired for French collections such as the Centre National d’Art Contemporain and the Musée de l’Histoire et de l’Immigration. Her work has been shown in France and internationally.
“Sarah Caron had already shown her Pakistani fashion photos Movida Massala at the Galerie Hegoa during the exhibition Regards des femmes in March 2015. So it’s a pleasure to rediscover her freshness, her expertise in composition and her wonderful treatment of colour on the theme of Cuba, which she knows so well”, commented Nathalie Atlan Landsburu, the director of the Galerie Hegoa.
For her part, Manon Moreau writes in an article that appeared in Polka Magazine in September 2016: “Havana, April 2016: while the Chanel fashion show is being prepared, Sarah Canon is producing photos for the Catalogue Arte y Moda, a biennial that honours Cuban fashion. To tell the story of Cuban fashion is to tell the story of Cuba and its Ajiaco (a large dish where all sorts of food are mixed together). From the beginning of the twentieth century the country distinguishes itself with the originality of its textile production. European fashion is adapted to the islands customs and climate. After the revolution and the break with the United States of America, the textile industry is deprived of imports and depends on local production. But for all that, the cruel lack of high quality material doesn’t impair the imagination and creativity of the islands many designers”.
