SAGA days at Fondation A Stichting Brussels – a weekend dedicated to photography
Visitors to Arles 2024 may remember the fine exhibition ‘When images learn to speak – Conceptualised Documentary Photography’ at La Mécanique Générale of LUMA Arles : It may have escaped your notice, but this was an exhibition built around the Astrid Ullens de Schooten Whettnall collection. The bulky book Saga was then also on sale there for the first time.
And then, of course, there are all those who did not want to brave temperatures of 35° C, and passed Arles by. Well for them there is very good news! Between the 19th and 22nd of September (just pick the 19th then you can go to UNSEEN the following days 😉 ), it’s party time at the ‘foundation A stichting’.
First of all, they want to present the photo book SAGA to the general public. The impetus is somewhere in Arles in 2021, with the idea of publishing a book around the favorites of Astrid Ullens de Schooten Whettnall. Soon they couldn’t choose, it became a huge publication, and in the end they had to redirect a bit. We will return to it in a detailed review, but it became a brilliant publication (images 4-6) Perhaps let the data speak for itself:
SAGA, A photographic journey from Lewis Baltz to Tarrah Krajnak, A co-publication of Ludion Publishers and A Foundation, 100 photographers, 1800 photos, 576 pages & published in French and in English
But that’s not all. Throughout the period, there will be a fascinating exhibition (no entry fee) featuring some 60 works never before seen at the Fondation A Stichting. (images 7-16) On top of this there will be a fascinating lecture on the production of ‘Artist Books’ in French, and also throughout the weekend a stock sale of the foundation’s previous editions. Titles by, among others, Walker Evans, Bernd & Hilla Becher, Max Regenberg, Guido Guidi, Francesco Neri… (images 17-24
