Romy Schneider shared a special relationship with the Gamma photo agency, notably with the photographers Juan Carlo Botti and Jean-Pierre Bonotte. A full 90% of the photographs currently on display at the Espace Landowski were taken for the agency.
Following Brigitte Bardot, the actress Romy Schneider will be the subject of a new exhibition at the Espace Landowski. The exhibition combines family photos, movie posters, still photographs and extracts from her films. Also on display are some of her letters and personal belongings.
Daughter of the actress Magda Schneider, the young Rosemary got her start in movies acting alongside her mother, as in Lilas Blanc, where they played mother and daughter. Feature films followed, with the series Sissi that first brought her fame. The exhibition reminds us that Schneider also performed for some of the great artists of her time: Orson Welles, Luchino Visconti, Otto Preminger and Costa-Gavras, among others.
From her love affair with the actor Alain Delon to her meeting the director Claude Sautet (she would go on to act in five of his films), the retrospective has chosen to highlight the question of chance encounters, which marked the turning points in the actress’s life.
It’s an occasion for the viewer to (re)discover this cinematic icon, too often limited to the image of the naïve Sissi, a part she identified little with, and which occupied only a small portion of her career. It is a beautiful tribute.
